Every employer across the UK will have to offer a workplace pension and pay into it, even if they employ just one person.
This is called automatic enrolment and is enforced by us, The Pensions Regulator. We are a public authority set up by the government to regulate work-based pensions.
We send employers information on how to meet their duties, so we want to ensure that business advisers like you understand what this is and what we are asking your clients to do.
Our online duties checker tool is a simple way of showing employers what they need to do and when they need to do it. The tool shows your clients which employer category they fall into, and gives them information to help them meet their duties under automatic enrolment.
To use the tool, employers will need some information to hand, including their PAYE reference, a letter code (which can be found on letters we send to them), and some details about their staff.
They'll then be asked a few basic questions, such as if they employ anyone or if they run a business. If they do employ staff we'll need to know if any meet the age and earnings criteria.
By telling us about themselves the duties checker will identify if they are either employers who have to provide their staff with a pension scheme, or employers who don't have to provide a pension but still have duties to fulfil.
We also use this information to send employers communications that are relevant to their specific duties. Employers will have their staging date confirmed; this is the date their automatic enrolment duties apply to them, and then we outline the important steps they need to take and when these should be carried out.
These vary depending on if they have staff to put into a pension scheme or not.
One of the first steps we ask your clients to complete is to confirm their details and nominate a point of contact to receive emails.
They may nominate you as their business adviser to receive these - this means you'll receive additional information to support them through the steps. You should speak to your clients about what's involved and agree how you will support them.
