Occupational defined contribution landscape 2024 annex

In this year’s statistics release, we describe the collection methods for the data contained in the annex to this publication, together with information on what is covered by each section of the annex.

  1. In this section and throughout, hybrid refers to schemes which have both a defined benefit (DB) section and a defined contribution (DC) section. Some hybrid schemes offer one benefit type (a combination of DB and DC, for example, DC with DB underpin), but these schemes are not covered here.
  2. File 1 (schemes), 2 (memberships), and 3 (finances) are based on schemes with 12 or more members (except for Table 1.1 and 1.10 in section 1, which is based on all schemes with two or more members).
  3. File 4 (automatic enrolment (AE) schemes) is based on all schemes with two or more members.
  4. File 5 (micro schemes) is based on schemes with two to 11 members.
  5. File 6 (effective date information) shows relevant effective date information.

File 1: Schemes

Notes

  1. Table 1.1 covers DC schemes with 2 or more members, excluding hybrid schemes with DC members.
  2. Tables 1.2 to 1.16 cover DC schemes with 12 or more members.
  3. Tables 1.2 and 1.3 include hybrid schemes with 12 or more DC members.
  4. Tables 1.4 to 1.13 exclude hybrid schemes with DC members.
  5. Figures in total columns may not equal the sum of figures in sub-columns due to rounding. Scheme numbers are rounded to the nearest ten.
  6. Table 1.1 is shown back to 1997, as in 1997 the Occupational Pension Regulatory Authority (the predecessor for The Pensions Regulator) took control of the pension register. There is a known peak in scheme registrations in 1988, and this is shown on Table 1.13.
  7. Table 1.1 is calculated starting from current scheme volumes and working back using annual scheme registrations and annual scheme wind ups. These calculations can be seen on Table 1.13.
  8. Tables 1.3 and 1.4 show the number of schemes who have reported having any members aged 50 to 59. Tables 1.5 and 1.6 show all schemes who have reported any members aged 60 or over.
  9. Table 1.16, which includes hybrid schemes and excludes micro schemes, corresponds to Figure 1 in the 2024 Occupational Defined Contribution Landscape report.
  10. Table 1.17, excluding hybrid schemes, corresponds to Figure 2 in the 2024 Occupational Defined Contribution Landscape report.
  11. Within the annex tables 1.7 and 4.3 a bundled and unbundled split is provided. This is defined logically via the following rules applied in sequence:
    • if a scheme lists the same company as their insurer and their administrator, or the contacts provided for the insurer and administrator share the same company domain in their email address; the scheme is classified as bundled.
    • if a scheme lists different companies as their insurer and administrator; the scheme is classified as unbundled.
    • if the administrator is not present or either role could not be derived from the email address data; the scheme is classified as unknown.
    • if an insurance company is not provided; the scheme is classified as unbundled.
  12. We operate a different scheme return for micro DC schemes (schemes with fewer than 12 members), with lower information requirements, and as such we show these schemes separately, and show less information about these schemes.
  13. Any figures of 5 or lower are considered potentially identifiable and marked as **. Membership figures are rounded to the nearest 1,000, and where a figure rounds to lower than 1,000 it is marked as ^^. Any financial amounts are rounded to the nearest £1,000,000, and where a financial amount rounds to a lower figure it is marked as ##.

File 2: Membership

Notes

  1. In this section and throughout, hybrid refers to schemes which have both a DB section and a DC section. Some hybrid schemes offer one benefit type (a combination of DB and DC, for example, DC with DB underpin), but these schemes are not covered here.
  2. Tables 2.1 to 2.4 and 2.14 to 2.15 cover all DC schemes with 12 or more members, including hybrid schemes with DC members.
  3. Tables 2.5 to 2.13 show DC schemes with 12 or more members but excludes hybrid schemes with DC members.
  4. Table 2.1 refers to Figure 3 in the 2024 Occupational Defined Contribution Landscape report.
  5. Figures in total columns may not equal the sum of figures in sub columns due to rounding. Membership figures are rounded to the nearest 1,000.
  6. Numbers of reported pensioner members are not shown here, though reported pensioner members are included in the total memberships figure. Please see the accompanying text document for a fuller explanation of this.
  7. Please see accompanying descriptive text for a definition of service provision (shown in table 2.13) and methodology for identifying them.
  8. We operate a different scheme return for micro DC schemes (schemes with fewer than 12 members), with lower information requirements, and as such we show these schemes separately, and show less information about these schemes.

Notes

  1. In this section and throughout, hybrid refers to schemes which have both a DB section and a DC section. Some hybrid schemes offer one benefit type (a combination of DB and DC, for example DC with DB underpin), but these schemes are not covered here.
  2. All tables show DC schemes with 12 or more members but exclude hybrid schemes with DC members.
  3. Table 3.1 refers to Figure 4 in the 2024 Occupational Defined Contribution Landscape report.
  4. Table 3.48 refers to Figure 5 in the 2024 Occupational Defined Contribution Landscape report.
  5. Figures in total columns may not equal the sum of figures in sub columns due to rounding. Scheme numbers are rounded to the nearest ten, financial amounts are rounded to the nearest £1,000,000, and membership figures are rounded to the nearest 1,000. Please note, where fields are calculated rounding is applied after totals have been derived.
  6. For assets and contributions not all relevant schemes provide the information. Figures shown here represent reported amounts. Relevant data is shown in the calculations tab such that users can make their own extrapolations if they wish.
  7. The phrase ‘market value of scheme assets’ refers to the fact that not all assets held by schemes have an inherent cash value (for example, property) and therefore the reported figure is based on the most recently available valuation of any such assets.
  8. We operate a different scheme return for micro DC schemes (schemes with fewer than 12 members), with lower information requirements, and as such we show these schemes separately, and show less information about these schemes.

Notes

  1. In this section and throughout, hybrid refers to schemes which have both a DB section and a DC section. Some hybrid schemes offer one benefit type (a combination of DB and DC, for example, DC with DB underpin), but these schemes are not covered here.
  2. Tables 4.1, 4.2, 4.4, 4.5, 4.7 and 4.8 cover DC schemes with 2 or more members, excluding hybrid schemes with DC members.
  3. Tables 4.3, 4.6 and 4.9 show DC schemes with 12 or more members but excludes hybrid schemes with DC members.
  4. Table 4.13 refers to Figure 6 in the 2024 Occupational Defined Contribution Landscape report.
  5. Table 4.14 refers to Figure 7 in the 2024 Occupational Defined Contribution Landscape report.
  7. Numbers of reported pensioner members are not shown here, though reported pensioner members are included in the total memberships figure. Please see the accompanying text document for a fuller explanation of this.
  8. Please see accompanying descriptive text for definitions of service providers (shown in table 4.3 and 4.6) and methodology for identifying them.
  9. We operate a different scheme return for micro DC schemes, with lower information requirements, and as such we show these schemes separately, and show less information about these schemes.
  11. Please see accompanying text document for methodology for identifying a scheme’s AE status.

  2. Tables 6.1 and 6.3 to 6.44 cover DC schemes with 12 or more members (the Membership information also including hybrid schemes with DC members).
  3. Tables 6.2 and 6.45 to 6.58 cover micro DC schemes with fewer than 12 members.
  4. We operate a different scheme return for micro DC schemes, with lower information requirements, and as such we show these schemes separately, and show less information about these schemes.
